AFD is aiming at continuing its activities in South Africa and is considering the possibility to support the Industrial Development Corporation of South Africa (IDC) through a programme dedicated to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) composed of:
- A senior credit line by AFD to IDC, potentially paired with a risk sharing facility;
- A technical support programme and investment grants funded by the EU and implemented by AFD;
- A senior credit line and/ or risk sharing facility by potential partner/s to a local commercial bank (not within the scope of this feasibility study).

In order to facilitate the launch of this project, AFD needs to get a good understanding of:
- The state of MSMEs financial inclusion, the existing financing support mechanisms dedicated to MSMEs and the current gaps in South Africa
- The IDC positioning, needs and weaknesses.
